Moyo Island — Indonesia’s quietest luxury secret.
Independent Moyo Island private tour curators. We design 5-7 day Sumbawa programs pairing waterfall-rich Moyo Island with hotel options across three tiers — Aman Reserve / Mid-tier Atelier / Sustainable Smart.

Why Moyo deserves attention.
Empty beaches + waterfalls
Mata Jitu and Diwu Mba’i waterfalls cascading through tropical forest. Empty white-sand beaches stretching for kilometers. Diving with reef sharks and mantas. Hidden bay snorkel sites.
Independent tour, your hotel choice
We’re not Aman-affiliated. We design the tour. You pick accommodation tier — Amanwana (Reserve), Moyo Eco Lodge (Atelier), or Bayan Tree Homestay (Smart). Same tour, three price points.
Sumbawa cultural integration
Adventure beyond Moyo: Sumbawa Besar town, traditional ikat weaving villages, Tambora volcano viewpoint, Hu’u beach ceremonial sites. We package Moyo with Sumbawa cultural depth.
Why we exist as independent curators
Moyo Island’s hospitality story is dominated by Amanwana — the Aman Resorts property that opened in 1990. It’s exceptional. It’s also $2,800-4,500 per night. Most travelers who want the Moyo experience can’t access Amanwana. We’re independent tour curators (not Aman-affiliated) building 5-7 day Sumbawa programs that include Moyo, with three hotel tier options matched to budget and travel style. Same waterfalls. Same diving. Same beaches. Three different ways to sleep.
Moyo Island geography
Moyo Island sits 3km off the north coast of Sumbawa, accessible by 30-minute speedboat from Tanjung Saran (Sumbawa main island). Total area: 32 km². Population approximately 1,500 distributed across small fishing villages. The interior is tropical forest — protected as a marine and forest conservation area. Eight named beaches, two major waterfalls (Mata Jitu and Diwu Mba’i), and pristine reef along the southern and eastern coasts.
The Aman Reserve tier — Amanwana
Amanwana is the Aman Resorts property on Moyo Island. 20 luxury tents on the beach. Princess Diana stayed here in 1995. Rates: $2,800-4,500 per night. Reservations 6-12 months in advance. Outstanding service, beach access, and luxury infrastructure. Best for travelers for whom the hotel itself is part of the experience. Our tour at Reserve tier integrates Amanwana stay + Sumbawa cultural extension. Total: $14,000-22,000 per couple for 7-day program.
The Atelier tier — Moyo Eco Lodge
Moyo Eco Lodge is the boutique mid-tier option. 12 garden bungalows, $480-720/night. Solar-powered, sustainable construction, locally-staffed. Beach access via short walk. Excellent food program. Best for travelers wanting luxury without the Aman premium. Our tour at Atelier tier: $7,500-9,800 per couple for 7-day program.
The Smart tier — Bayan Tree Homestay
Bayan Tree Homestay is the budget-friendly option. 4 simple beach bungalows, $180-280/night. Family-run by a local Sumbawan family. Basic but clean. Authentic experience. Best for travelers prioritizing experience over luxury accommodation. Our tour at Smart tier: $3,400-4,800 per couple for 7-day program.
How the tour stays consistent across tiers
Same Moyo waterfall hikes (Mata Jitu and Diwu Mba’i). Same diving sites (Coral Garden, Stingray Alley, Pelagic Wall). Same Sumbawa cultural day (Tambora viewpoint, traditional ikat workshop). Same private guide team. Same vehicle quality (4WD with English-functional driver across all tiers). The tier difference is purely accommodation and meals.
Why we’re independent
We are not affiliated with Amanwana, Moyo Eco Lodge, or Bayan Tree Homestay. We are independent tour curators based in Bali and Sumbawa, designing private itineraries and matching guests with whichever property serves their travel style.
Plan your Moyo tour
Five to seven day private tours. May to October peak. Three hotel tiers.
Practical guide — Moyo Island (Sumbawa)
Getting there
Sumbawa Besar Airport (SWQ), Sumbawa Island is the main gateway to Moyo Island (Sumbawa). Plan to arrive in Sumbawa Besar (gateway) and Moyo Island as your base. Most Western travelers connect via Jakarta or Bali; allow a full day for travel given internal Indonesian flight schedules. Direct international connections are limited — almost all visitors transit through Jakarta-Soekarno Hatta (CGK) or Denpasar-Bali (DPS) before continuing to the destination airport.
Best time to visit
May to October (dry season, best for diving and beach activities). Average temperatures sit at 26-32°C year-round (coastal climate), with water temperatures 27-29°C year-round, suitable for snorkeling and diving. The off-season runs November to April (rainy season, monsoon swell affects coastal access). We typically recommend booking 4-6 months ahead for prime-season travel; 2-3 months for shoulder-season departures. Festival calendars and local cultural events shift the optimal weeks each year, and we update our voyage calendar quarterly to reflect the current best windows.
Money, connectivity, and what to bring
Withdraw cash in Sumbawa Besar before transfer to Moyo Island. Connectivity: 4G in Sumbawa Besar; basic at resort; spotty in remote bays. Currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). Voltage is 220V, plug type C/F. Time zone is WITA (UTC+8), no daylight savings adjustment. Pack light and modular — temperatures vary significantly between coastal and highland sites. Reusable water bottle, sun protection, modest dress for cultural visits, and good walking shoes are minimum requirements. Cash in small denominations works better than cards across most Moyo Island (Sumbawa) establishments.
Visa and entry
Visa-on-arrival (30 days, $35) for most Western passports. Yellow fever vaccination is not required from US/EU origin countries. Travel insurance is mandatory for our voyages and must include relevant activity coverage (diving for marine destinations, evacuation for highland or remote routes). We provide a recommended insurance broker on request — most clients use World Nomads or DAN (Divers Alert Network).
Safety, language, and tipping
Generally safe and uncrowded. Standard travel precautions apply. Local language: Indonesian + Sumbawa local language (Bahasa Sumbawa). Our guides interpret on cultural visits. Tipping: Not mandatory. $25-35/day for resort staff and guides appreciated. Indonesian travel etiquette: remove shoes when entering homes, dress modestly at religious sites, and ask before photographing people in villages.
Activity certification level
Open Water minimum, Advanced for some current sites. We assess each guest individually — the certification is a baseline, not a guarantee. Strong currents, depth, and surface intervals require comfort beyond the minimum certification level. Beginners are welcome on appropriate sites; we will not place guests on dives or treks above their experience level.
Cost expectations
Moyo Island (Sumbawa) travel costs vary widely. Backpacker independent travel runs $50-90 per day. Mid-range guided tours run $200-400 per day per person. Premium small-group voyages and luxury programs run $500-1,000 per day per person. Total trip cost (including international flights, visas, voyage, insurance, and tips) typically lands at $7,000-13,000 per person for our flagship 7-12 day programs from a US/EU origin.
Why book through us
We are a small operator focused on a tight portfolio of Indonesian destinations. We do not run weekly mass tours. We operate fewer voyages each year, which lets us hand-select naturalists, historians, and divemasters as on-board interpretive guides — most are residents of the regions we visit. Group sizes are intentionally small (eight to twelve guests) so cultural visits remain immersive rather than performative. When we recommend a particular departure window, we are weighing six axes — sea conditions, festival overlap, dive visibility, accommodation availability, school holiday traffic, and historical-site access. Most operators optimize for one or two of these. We optimize for all six. Our pricing is transparent and inclusive — most of what your trip needs is already in the quoted price. We tell you up front what is not included rather than discovering it on day six.
Nearby Indonesian destinations to consider
Moyo Island (Sumbawa) pairs well with extensions to other Indonesian regions. Bali (Denpasar) is the most common pre-trip stop for jet-lag recovery and gentle introduction to Indonesian travel rhythms. Komodo National Park (Labuan Bajo) suits travelers wanting reef-shark encounters and the iconic Padar Island viewpoint. Raja Ampat in West Papua is the global benchmark for biodiversity and pairs well with Banda for marine-focused trips. Lombok and Gili Trawangan offer beach-relaxation finishes. We coordinate seamless multi-region itineraries on request.
