What Mata Jitu is
Mata Jitu is a seven-tier cascade in the inland forest of Moyo Island’s central highlands. Each tier drops into a turquoise mineral pool, with the lowest pool wide enough for swimming and the upper pools narrowing into deep plunge pools. Total elevation change from base to summit pool is approximately 80 metres. Sumba tourism
The waterfall sits inside the Moyo conservation reserve. Access requires a permit (negligible cost; we arrange) and a guided approach. The trail head is on the eastern coast, approximately 30 minutes by 4×4 from the major hotel cluster.
The water is non-tidal — fed by inland springs — and consequently warmer than coastal waters. Mineral content gives the turquoise color; visibility is exceptional.
Trek logistics — what to expect
From the trail head, the approach is approximately 60 minutes through monsoon-deciduous forest. Trail conditions are moderate — some rocky steps, occasional muddy stretches in November-March. Total horizontal distance is 2 kilometres.
Footwear matters. Sturdy trail shoes or hiking sandals with grip. Flip-flops are not appropriate. We provide trekking poles on request.
Bring: swimwear (changing facilities at the trail head are basic), microfiber towel, water bottle, dry bag for valuables, mosquito repellent. The forest section has DEET-required mosquito presence April-October.
Trek time is 60 minutes ascent, 90 minutes at the falls, 45 minutes descent. Plan a 4-hour total excursion including transfers.
Best photo positions
The iconic photograph — the one Princess Diana sat for in 1993 — is taken from the cliff overlook above the second pool. The cliff is named the Diana Overlook locally. Position is east-facing; morning light gives blue-water depth, afternoon light gives jungle-canopy backlight.
Lower pool wide-angle: stand at the eastern edge and shoot west toward the seven-tier ladder. Best at 7-9 AM with side light. Use polarizing filter to cut surface reflection.
Plunge pool macro: the third tier has a deep plunge pool with extremely clear water. Underwater photos with a GoPro work well; freshwater fish (a local Moyo carp species) circle the pool.
Tier seven at the summit: the smallest pool, surrounded by jungle on three sides. The ‘cathedral’ shot — vertical composition with the falls dropping into frame from above — is the difficult one.
Why we visit at sunrise
Late morning (10 AM onward) the falls develop crowd density — local Moyo islanders, day-tripper boats from Sumbawa Besar, and the occasional Amanwana guest. The site is sacred to Moyo islanders and the visitor experience benefits from being there at first light.
Our 5-day Moyo private voyage Day 3 schedule is: 5:30 AM trail head, 7:00 AM at the falls, picnic breakfast at the second pool, 9:30 AM departure descent before the day boats arrive. For travelers willing to start early, this is the right rhythm.
Late afternoon (3 PM onward) is also relatively quiet — the day boats depart by 14:30. Sunset light at the falls is also remarkable. We sometimes do an afternoon visit if morning weather is uncooperative.
Combining with the Princess Diana cliff
The Princess Diana memorial cliff is on the eastern coast — separate from Mata Jitu — about 25 minutes by 4×4. The cliff overlooks Saleh Bay and offers a sunset position that is genuinely memorable.
We typically visit Mata Jitu in the morning (cooler, less crowded) and the Princess Diana cliff at sunset on a different day. Combining both in one day is possible but rushed.

Photography ethics at sacred sites — what to know about Mata Jitu
Mata Jitu is not just a tourist destination — it has cultural significance for Moyo islanders as a freshwater source and a place of community gathering for centuries before tourism. Photography ethics matter. Avoid drone photography at the falls during midday hours when local families may be present. The seven pools are used for swimming and bathing by the community; respect their privacy and don’t photograph people without explicit permission. The Princess Diana cliff overlook is named locally — the framing is fine, but please don’t pose disrespectfully. Underwater photography in the pools is fine; avoid using flash that disturbs the small fish populations. Commercial photography — including paid Instagram content — requires written permit from the Moyo conservation reserve administration. We can help facilitate the permit application but cannot guarantee approval. Personal/non-commercial photography is welcomed and supports the conservation fund through your visit fee.
Beyond the falls: Moyo Island’s untouched allure
Imagine the scent of frangipani carried on a gentle breeze, mingling with the distant murmur of the turquoise sea – this is the prelude to Moyo Island. While the Mata Jitu waterfall rightly claims its fame, the island itself is a verdant jewel, a designated marine nature reserve covering approximately 30,000 hectares. Beyond the cascade, explorers discover a landscape rich with biodiversity, from the dense tropical forest echoing with birdsong to the pristine coral reefs teeming with marine life just offshore. The island is home to a unique ecosystem, including wild deer and various species of endemic birds, offering unparalleled opportunities for nature photography and tranquil observation.
Moyo’s allure lies in its profound sense of untouched wilderness. Unlike more developed Indonesian islands, here, the rhythm of nature dictates the day. Miles of deserted white-sand beaches invite quiet contemplation, while hidden coves reveal crystal-clear waters perfect for snorkeling or diving. The island’s volcanic origins contribute to its dramatic topography, creating a stunning backdrop for any adventure, whether it’s a leisurely stroll along the shore or a more adventurous trek into the interior. This commitment to preservation ensures that every visit feels like a discovery, a privilege to witness nature in its most authentic state. A sanctuary of calm: Moyo’s exclusive retreats
For discerning travelers, Moyo Island offers more than just breathtaking scenery; it provides a sanctuary of unparalleled calm and exclusivity. With limited development, the island maintains a profound sense of privacy, making it an ideal escape for those seeking serenity away from the world’s gaze. Luxury accommodations here are not just places to stay, but meticulously designed havens that blend seamlessly with the natural environment, often featuring fewer than 20 bungalows to ensure an intimate and personalized experience for every guest. Expect world-class service, bespoke excursions, and a deep connection to the surrounding nature, all delivered with an understated elegance.
These exclusive retreats are crafted to enhance the island’s inherent tranquility, offering amenities that range from private plunge pools overlooking the ocean to open-air spa pavilions where treatments are infused with local ingredients. Dining experiences celebrate fresh, locally sourced ingredients, often featuring seafood caught just hours before. The emphasis is on holistic well-being and a deep immersion into the island’s peaceful ambiance, allowing guests to truly disconnect and rejuvenate. It’s a place where the gentle lapping of waves is your alarm clock and the starry night sky your entertainment.
The journey to paradise: Reaching Moyo Island
Part of Moyo Island’s mystique is its journey. Reaching this secluded paradise is an adventure in itself, reinforcing its status as a truly exclusive destination. Typically, travelers fly into either Lombok International Airport (LOP) or Sumbawa Besar Airport (SWQ). From these hubs, the next leg involves a scenic transfer, often by private speedboat or a traditional Indonesian phinisi yacht, across the cerulean waters of the Flores Sea. A typical speedboat transfer from Sumbawa Besar can take around 30-45 minutes, offering stunning coastal views and the exhilarating feeling of approaching an untouched land.
The journey itself is an integral part of the luxury experience, carefully orchestrated by your private tour atelier to be as seamless and comfortable as possible. Imagine the sea breeze on your face, the sun glinting off the water, and the distant silhouette of Moyo Island growing larger with every passing minute. This deliberate remoteness ensures that only those truly seeking an authentic, high-end escape make the voyage, preserving the island’s pristine character. It’s a journey that culminates not just in arrival, but in a profound sense of having discovered a hidden gem. For more details on the broader region, visit Sumbawa on Indonesia.travel.
