Why this tour exists
Most Moyo trips are hotel-led — Amanwana programs your week. We invert that: we lead the tour itinerary, you choose which of three hotels to base from. The result is a deeper Moyo + Sumbawa experience that respects the breadth of the destination rather than concentrating around a single resort property.
The 7-day route
Day 1: Sumbawa Besar arrival, drive to chosen hotel embarkation point. Day 2: Speedboat to Moyo Island, hotel check-in, first beach exploration. Day 3: Mata Jitu waterfall trek + Diwu Mba’i picnic. Day 4: Diving day (Coral Garden + Stingray Alley). Day 5: Empty beach exploration + traditional fishing village visit. Day 6: Return to Sumbawa main island, Tambora volcano viewpoint, traditional ikat weaving workshop. Day 7: Sumbawa Besar departure.

Three hotel tiers, same itinerary (per couple, 7 days, all-inclusive)

| Atelier — Moyo Eco Lodge | Garden bungalow, solar-powered eco-luxury, all meals included | $9,800 |
| Smart — Bayan Tree Homestay | Beach bungalow, family-run, breakfast + 3 dinners included | $4,800 |
Reserve tier — Amanwana (the luxury choice)
Amanwana is one of Aman Resorts’ most iconic properties. 20 luxury tents on the beach, exclusive Moyo Island access, full spa, gourmet kitchen, butler service. Princess Diana stayed here in 1995 — the property has retained its discreet luxury identity since. Our 7-day tour at Reserve tier integrates Amanwana stay + private Sumbawa cultural day. Total: $22,000 per couple all-inclusive (excluding international flights). Best for travelers for whom luxury accommodation is part of the experience.
Atelier tier — Moyo Eco Lodge (the value-luxury choice)
Moyo Eco Lodge opened in 2018. Solar-powered, locally-staffed, sustainable construction. 12 garden bungalows. Beach access via short walk. Outstanding food program with locally-sourced ingredients. From $480/night. Our 7-day tour at Atelier tier: $9,800 per couple all-inclusive. Best for travelers wanting luxury without Aman premium.
Smart tier — Bayan Tree Homestay (the experience choice)
Bayan Tree Homestay is the family-run option. 4 simple beach bungalows. Locally-staffed, locally-owned. Basic but clean accommodations. Family-style dining with Sumbawan cuisine. From $180/night. Our 7-day tour at Smart tier: $4,800 per couple all-inclusive. Best for travelers prioritizing cultural experience over accommodation luxury.
How the tour itinerary stays consistent
Same Moyo Island excursions, same waterfalls, same diving, same Sumbawa cultural day, same private guide team across all three tiers. The differences: accommodation level, meal sourcing (Amanwana vs Eco Lodge vs Bayan Tree), and amenity access (spa at Reserve only). All tiers receive equal cultural depth and natural-attraction access.
FAQ
Are you Aman’s official agent?
No. We are independent tour curators. We work with Amanwana via direct booking like any guest. We are not affiliated with the Aman brand and have no commercial pressure to upsell to that property. Our Reserve tier integrates Amanwana but we’d recommend Atelier tier to most travelers who don’t specifically want the Aman experience.
Can I customize the route?
Yes. The 7-day tour is our signature, but we offer 5-day, 6-day, and 9-day variants. Common customizations: extending to neighboring Komodo via boat (3-day add-on), adding Tambora volcano summit attempt (3-day add-on for fit travelers), adding Lombok beach finale (2-day add-on).
Is Moyo safe?
Yes. Moyo Island is one of the safest Indonesian islands for travelers. Standard precautions apply (don’t leave valuables visible). The fishing community welcomes visitors. The marine conservation area is well-managed.
How experienced should divers be?
Open Water minimum. Advanced for some current sites at Pelagic Wall. Beginners can do snorkel-only program with our family-friendly tier.
How do I choose between the three tiers?
Reserve (Amanwana) if luxury accommodation is part of your honeymoon/anniversary. Atelier (Eco Lodge) if you want luxury without Aman premium. Smart (Bayan Tree) if you prioritize the natural and cultural experience over accommodation luxury. We do a 30-min planning call to help you decide.

Practical guide — Moyo Island (Sumbawa)
Getting there
Sumbawa Besar Airport (SWQ), Sumbawa Island is the main gateway to Moyo Island (Sumbawa). Plan to arrive in Sumbawa Besar (gateway) and Moyo Island as your base. Most Western travelers connect via Jakarta or Bali; allow a full day for travel given internal Indonesian flight schedules. Direct international connections are limited — almost all visitors transit through Jakarta-Soekarno Hatta (CGK) or Denpasar-Bali (DPS) before continuing to the destination airport.
Best time to visit
May to October (dry season, best for diving and beach activities). Average temperatures sit at 26-32°C year-round (coastal climate), with water temperatures 27-29°C year-round, suitable for snorkeling and diving. The off-season runs November to April (rainy season, monsoon swell affects coastal access). We typically recommend booking 4-6 months ahead for prime-season travel; 2-3 months for shoulder-season departures. Festival calendars and local cultural events shift the optimal weeks each year, and we update our voyage calendar quarterly to reflect the current best windows.
Money, connectivity, and what to bring
Withdraw cash in Sumbawa Besar before transfer to Moyo Island. Connectivity: 4G in Sumbawa Besar; basic at resort; spotty in remote bays. Currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). Voltage is 220V, plug type C/F. Time zone is WITA (UTC+8), no daylight savings adjustment. Pack light and modular — temperatures vary significantly between coastal and highland sites. Reusable water bottle, sun protection, modest dress for cultural visits, and good walking shoes are minimum requirements. Cash in small denominations works better than cards across most Moyo Island (Sumbawa) establishments.
Visa and entry
Visa-on-arrival (30 days, $35) for most Western passports. Yellow fever vaccination is not required from US/EU origin countries. Travel insurance is mandatory for our voyages and must include relevant activity coverage (diving for marine destinations, evacuation for highland or remote routes). We provide a recommended insurance broker on request — most clients use World Nomads or DAN (Divers Alert Network).
Safety, language, and tipping
Generally safe and uncrowded. Standard travel precautions apply. Local language: Indonesian + Sumbawa local language (Bahasa Sumbawa). Our guides interpret on cultural visits. Tipping: Not mandatory. $25-35/day for resort staff and guides appreciated. Indonesian travel etiquette: remove shoes when entering homes, dress modestly at religious sites, and ask before photographing people in villages.
Activity certification level
Open Water minimum, Advanced for some current sites. We assess each guest individually — the certification is a baseline, not a guarantee. Strong currents, depth, and surface intervals require comfort beyond the minimum certification level. Beginners are welcome on appropriate sites; we will not place guests on dives or treks above their experience level.
Cost expectations
Moyo Island (Sumbawa) travel costs vary widely. Backpacker independent travel runs $50-90 per day. Mid-range guided tours run $200-400 per day per person. Premium small-group voyages and luxury programs run $500-1,000 per day per person. Total trip cost (including international flights, visas, voyage, insurance, and tips) typically lands at $7,000-13,000 per person for our flagship 7-12 day programs from a US/EU origin.
Why book through us
We are a small operator focused on a tight portfolio of Indonesian destinations. We do not run weekly mass tours. We operate fewer voyages each year, which lets us hand-select naturalists, historians, and divemasters as on-board interpretive guides — most are residents of the regions we visit. Group sizes are intentionally small (eight to twelve guests) so cultural visits remain immersive rather than performative. When we recommend a particular departure window, we are weighing six axes — sea conditions, festival overlap, dive visibility, accommodation availability, school holiday traffic, and historical-site access. Most operators optimize for one or two of these. We optimize for all six. Our pricing is transparent and inclusive — most of what your trip needs is already in the quoted price. We tell you up front what is not included rather than discovering it on day six.
Nearby Indonesian destinations to consider
Moyo Island (Sumbawa) pairs well with extensions to other Indonesian regions. Bali (Denpasar) is the most common pre-trip stop for jet-lag recovery and gentle introduction to Indonesian travel rhythms. Komodo National Park (Labuan Bajo) suits travelers wanting reef-shark encounters and the iconic Padar Island viewpoint. Raja Ampat in West Papua is the global benchmark for biodiversity and pairs well with Banda for marine-focused trips. Lombok and Gili Trawangan offer beach-relaxation finishes. We coordinate seamless multi-region itineraries on request.
How our atelier service compares to direct hotel booking
The honest comparison: direct booking for the Smart tier (Sea Lavender Beachfront, $180/night) is reasonable. The team responds to email; the Sumbawa Besar transfers can be self-coordinated; the property is straightforward. For Atelier and Reserve tiers the math shifts. Cocoteraie’s reservation flow is in French via WhatsApp, the property is small enough that confirmed availability changes within hours, and pre-arrival communication is sparse. Amanwana’s reservation flow is functional but the brand is intentionally distant — they assume you arrive with clear expectations and don’t volunteer pre-trip detail. Our atelier service handles the messy middle: dietary-specifics briefed in writing to the kitchen, anniversary-cake choreography at the cliff, ikat-textile gift coordination, traditional Sumbawan welcome ceremony if requested, and dive-site permit logistics. We never markup the property rate; the $1,200 atelier fee is our only revenue from your voyage. For multi-stop trips combining Moyo with Komodo or Bali, our coordination value increases — we hold relationships with three Komodo phinisi operators and arrange cross-region transfers seamlessly.
Sustainability and responsible Moyo Island travel
Moyo Island sits inside a marine conservation area established in 1986 as one of Indonesia’s first marine reserves. The eastern coast — where Amanwana, the Mata Jitu trail, and most diving occurs — falls within the strictest protection zone. Our voyages adhere to the conservation reserve rules: no anchoring on coral, no fishing, no collection of any marine organisms (alive or shells), and no drone photography below 30 meters altitude over reef. We work exclusively with dive operators certified by the Indonesian Marine Conservation Foundation. The Mata Jitu permit fee we coordinate (negligible cost; we pre-pay) supports trail maintenance and ranger salaries. The Saleh Bay community fisheries co-op supplies seafood to all three accommodation tiers; the cooperative model keeps fishing pressure sustainable. We explicitly don’t sell experiences that compromise the reserve’s protection — no jet-skiing, no fishing tours, no live-bait diving practices.
Pricing transparency — what changes the final cost
The fixed costs of every Moyo voyage: atelier service fee ($1,200 per voyage, 2-6 pilgrims) plus selected accommodation tier nightly rate × 4 nights. Variable costs that affect your final invoice: 1) Domestic flights Bali to Sumbawa Besar — $80-150 per person depending on Garuda vs Wings Air and booking lead time. 2) Bali airport transfer if not included in your Bali stay — $40-80 per direction. 3) Spa and wellness extras at Amanwana or Cocoteraie — $80-200 per treatment. 4) Alcohol at Amanwana — wine starts at $80/bottle, premium spirits $150+. 5) Diving certification or refresher courses — $400-600 if needed. 6) Photographer hire (we have a vetted Sumbawan photographer) — $400-800 per session. 7) Anniversary or special-occasion arrangements — $200-500 depending on scope. We provide a final all-in estimate during the discovery call, and we never invoice for anything not pre-agreed. We are an independent tour curator and are not affiliated with Aman Resorts.
